My first world cup… It’s all over; we ended up progressing game by game and making top 8 by winning to India in our pool play 3-0. We played to our game plan and all our hard work paid off.
We faced 3rd ranked China in our play off game for 7th and 8th. We didn’t take the game lightly. It was very important for us to win. We needed to show we are competitive with higher ranked teams. We have had recent success against them. Beating them in Rabo trophy in Holland to come 3rd and then also in Champions Trophy to come 5th. We knew it was anyone’s game and it wasn’t going to be easy. Our first problem that arose was a horrible thunder storm that flooded the turf. We had to postpone the game until it all passed and the turf was no longer flooded.
Finally after an hour or so we got the nod that the game was on and it was time to focus in to the task at hand. We kept to the game plan and never stopped fighting. We had a lot of encouragement and chants from a huge supporters group. Also to make the occasion even more special the other supporters from the Argentina public were out cheering us along too. The end result was 3-0 to us =). We couldn’t have been happier.
We achieved our goal even after a few results not going our way in pool play.
Saturday….. Finals day! A stunning day emergaged. First game Germany vs England. England took it out 2-1.
As we waited for Argentina and Holland to arrive the stadium filled right up. There was cheering and chants that I’m sure you could have from a mile away. I have never been in such an atmosphere. It was a great experience. The game got underway and the chanting and cheering continued. 1-0 to Argentina wow the crowed went nuts. Then it was 2-0.
There were drums and cheering going the whole time, until yeap Holland got a goal back and the stadium just went dead silent. It was a rare thing to hear especially as the crowd was such a rowdy bunch.
The end score was 3-1 to Argentina. As you could imagine the stadium went crazy.
The closing ceremony was just as good as the opening one. There were fireworks and hundreds of people. The Argentineans sure know how to party and make occasions like this so great.
I had such a great experience and also meet some really amazing people I’ll never forget =).
For my first world cup it was packed with every emotion possible but also so much fun. The team and I loved the hospitality and also all the fans that supported us right through no matter the results. I would just like to thank all the people that came all the way to support us and also the locals that made us feel like stars. This will be an ever lasting memory and glad I got the opportunity =)
