WWC10 x DAY6 x NZ v JPN

Hockey is now an extreme sport. It was zero degrees at the start of Japan v New Zealand and with that wind ripping though could have been lower.
All the action took place in the second half after a scoreless first half. Japan came out quickly and scored from well worked passing not once but twice to place New Zealand on the back foot.
The girls in Black altered their game plan after missing numerous penalty corners in a row. It was now use the blistering pace of Anita Punt to break the lines holding the ball. It worked as the Japanese couldn’t get close to Punty and she created space in the deep wings. First Krystal Forgesson was rewarded for her great shots on goal and scored the first, and then Punty crossed perfectly for the second.
Two all was the final score in extreme conditions, with the draw locking both teams out of a finals chance.

Australia have figured in the standings for the World Cup a few tournaments in a row now, and with the men doing so well in 2010 there is a lot of expectation being built up over the Aussie team.
Their first hit-out is against a lesser-known Japan. This doesn’t mean they aren’t good, just that many of us know less about the team and unfortunately I don’t have my designated Gryphon Japanese insight machine, Yoshi, with me.
Seems that the Aussies also didn’t quite have the bottle full on the Japanese. It was Japan, who in the first ten minutes, took control of the play. Even though they looked the most dangerous early it was only a matter of time before Australia came through with something more concrete. That happened and a goal was scored.
It would be the only goal for most of the match. New kid on the block, Kate Jenner was strong in her power hitting from half back setting up deep attacks. Teneal Attard and Fi Johnson shut down the Japanese midfield and took the ball away from their sticks to control the midfield.
That’s where the game was made and played, the midfield. An arm wrestle between two Rocky Balboa’s at the same time was the gist of the tussle. Very late in the game each team scored to make the final score 2 goals Australia and 1 goal Japan.
The Japanese played very well and made the Aussies work for their win.
In a great show of respect at the top level, the Japanese team lined up infront of the Aussies after the game and as one bowed in respect.

F-H-E CUP x JAPAN x GOOD VIBES

A couple of the Gryphon Crew are in Fukui Japan for the FHE CUP JAPAN playing with ACTARS. The tournament was won my Mitsubishi. A highlight for me was dragging out “Jimmy’ Nobui from retirement. Jimmy is a Gryphon Goalkeeping Legend who played Japan for about 15 years and also played a few seasons in the Perth League. Along with the 4 team tournament a number of Junior Development Camps were coached by Todd Williams from Living Hockey. Playing and coaching hockey in Japan is a great cultural experience, the people are wonderful the landscapes dramatic and the food is sensational. A big thanks to our hosts Fukui Club and to Yoshi Sashiki and Aussie Bob for arranging everything for us. Also to F-H-E.com.au and the kids who were super enthusiastic. Check out the photo’s, good times in Japan!
Cheers, Petto
