Well guys and gals, while here in Melbourne covering the Champion’s Trophy, the date has changed and well it’s now December 1. What does this mean? The great month of Movember has ended. It’s now PoMo. The day all of us with the great moustache shaves them off. The photo above is the last hurrah of my Mo before it met the shave.
I am sure I’ll not be alone in say that this day was wanting to come, especially for in the teams training hard in the Perth heat. Having a constant sweat-band on your face is a unique experience, but what can I say? It was worth every minute.
A huge amount of the Gryphon guys around the world participated, from the Kookaburras, English and Dutch hockey team members as well as the staff here at Gryphon HQ. I’m proud to say we’ve been successful in raising some great amounts of money for the cause.
Today is PoMO (Post, Mo). That first day that everything is going to feel naked. Today the Aussie’s play England at CTT09 minus the mo. Unless some boys have got attached to it.
On behalf of the all the Gryphon guys that participated, we’d like to THANK YOU, the people who donated to the Movember charity. You will hopefully make a difference to men’s health, and it’s something we would all love to see. So once again THANK YOU.
I’ll catch ya later today with game news.
DC… PoMo version.

MOVEMBER :: CHANGING THE FACE OF MEN’S HEALTH
OK G-CREW, listen up, this month we’re throwing our weight behind a great cause and we thought it time to word you all up on everything Movember. You’ll see G-TEAM ambassadors Kiel Brown, Rob Hammond, Fergy Kavanagh and Brent Dancer all sporting the Mo this month along with the staff at Gryphon HQ and its all for charity. So please, read on and get involved!
Movember is an annual, month long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.
Mo Bros, supported by their Mo Sistas, start Movember (November 1st) clean shaven and then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache. During Movember, each Mo Bro effectively becomes a walking billboard for men’s health and, via their Mo, raises essential funds and awareness for Movember’s men’s health partners – The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue – the national depression initiative. At the end of Movember, a series of Gala Partés are held to thank Mo Bros and Sistas for their support and fund raising efforts.
The idea for Movember came about in 2003 when a few mates were having a beer in a small bar in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Inspired by the women’s health movement, it was recognized that men were lacking a way to engage and actively involve themselves in their own health. During a conversation about fashion and past trends, the idea came up to bring the moustache back for one month, and in doing so, have some fun, raise a small amount of money and hopefully encourage men to talk about their health with each other.
Since this time, Movember has continued to grow each year, both in terms of participation numbers and funds raised. In its first year, 30 Mo Bros took part in Movember and last year, in Australia alone, 125,000 Mo Bros & Sistas got on board, raising more than $8million for each of Movember’s men’s health partners
Today, in its sixth consecutive year, Movember takes place around the world. Motivated by what was happening in Australia, a further five countries now embrace the Mo each November; New Zealand, US, Canada, UK and Ireland are all helping Movember to achieve its ultimate goal – to change the face of men’s health globally.
To date, Movember has raised AUS$60 million globally for the fight against prostate cancer and depression in men. And, more importantly, as a direct result, male awareness of health issues has improved with Movember helping to spread health messages directly to millions of Mo Bros & Sistas around the world.
Going forward, Movember will continue to work towards helping to change established habits and attitudes and make men aware of the risks they face, thereby increasing early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.
MO-INFO :: CHANGING THE FACE OF MEN’S HEALTH
WHAT
- Movember is an annual, month long celebration of the Mo which highlights men’s health issues, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men
- Mo Bros (men who grow a Mo), supported by the Mo Sistas (women who love a Mo) in their life, register at Movember.com and then start Movember 1st with a clean?shaven face. They have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache.
- The idea for Movember was conceived in Melbourne by a few mates over a beer in 2003. There were 30 Mo Bros in the first year and in 2008 there were 125,000 Mo Bros and Sistas in Australia alone.
- In Australia, Movember raises awareness and funds for The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue? the national depression initiative
WHERE
- Movember originated in Australia in 2003 but due to its success has grown globally and now takes place in five further countries – New Zealand, US, Canada, UK and Ireland. In 2008, 173,435 participants raised AUS$29.7 million.

WHEN
- Movember takes place during the month of November – it runs from November 1st – 30th each year.
- 2009 will be Movember’s sixth consecutive year in Australia

- Because the genuine risk prostate cancer and depression offer up need to be recognised:
- Each year in Australia, 1 in 11 men will develop prostate cancer before they are 70 and close to 3,000
- men will die o In Australia, 1 in 8 men will experience depression in their lifetime – most of whom will not seek help
- Very big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement
- Via the Mo, Movember aims to provoke conversation around men’s health, with a view to breaking down traditional taboos and habits
- As a result of last year’s campaign, The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) and beyondblue: the national depression initiative – both received $8,135,630 which is enabling them to fund a series of initiatives which would otherwise not be possible
HOW
- Take part by going online at www.movember.com and registering as a Mo Bros or Mo Sista o Take part as an individual
- Be a team captain and recruit a team of Mo Bros & Sistas
- Join an existing team. At the end of Movember, a series of Gala Partés are held across Australia (and the world). They are to thank Mo

Getting my MO’ on!

Hi All,
Well, after much persuading, my lovely fiancee’ Samantha has let me loose to grow the mo’ in support of Movember and Mens health. Normally the kind hearted Sam wouldn’t have an issue with supporting such a great cause except this time round we are getting married in early December, which means all those lovely photo’s of the lead-up to the big day are gonna have me grinning ear to ear with a moustache of some description plastered on my top lip. But when it comes to charity all vanity must be put to the side and valuable upper-lip-real-estate must be for sale!
I’ll also be keeping my mo’ for the start of the Champions Trophy in Melbourne, which will make for some interesting playing shots…be sure to check these out when they get posted.
Now I’ll be keeping you all updated on the “State of the Mo” right here on G-Life and also on my personal page on the Movember site
So here’s the thing, Movember supports both the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue, so if you can spare the coin please donate to help raise much needed funds for Mens Health on my personal page! For those out there that have already got on board a big thanks!
Stay tuned for my updates, my future wife’s complaints, my dog looking at me like I’m a stranger and my orange upper lip….. ‘go the ranger mo’!
Cheers Rob
P.S; Kiel Brown, can you give me three weeks head-start on you, as I fear four weeks of me growing will be a few days for you!
P.P.S; Dad, Mum, the mo’ will be off for the wedding, so please step away from the shaving cream and put the cut-throat blade down
MO FACT: Studies have shown that pool cleaners with moustaches are also more likely to wear short shorts and aviators…

It’s go time with the Mo. Movember has now officially started and from the Aussie Men’s team (the Kookaburras) the Gryphon lads have got into the spirit of things here.
Where does the donation money go? In Australia it goes to two main foundations. 1/ The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and 2/ Beyond Blue.
Some of the boys will track their progress here on Gryphon-life.com, while all of them will be available to track on their official Movember webpage. We encourage you to get on board with this great fund-raiser for men’s health and support your mates, your work colleges and the lads from Gryphon (who incidentally WILL be playing in the Champion’s Trophy with their Mo).
So why all the hype?
1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in their lifetime
1 in 8 men will experience depression in their lifetime
The G-Team Kookaburras that are doing the Mo thing in support of Movember are listed below with links to their Movember donation page:
So everyone, dig deep and help the Movember movement to change the face of men’s health.
