It has been a good year for Belgium hockey! In August we qualified for the Olympics by reaching the semi finals at the European Championship in Mönchengladbach! We beat Spain 3-2 in the group phase, which led to qualification for the London Olympics! This was our main goal so it was a big achievement from all of the team!
After the EC we played the Champions Challenge in South Africa. For the first time in Belgium history we won the Champions Challenge. We beat Argentina in the semi final after shoot-outs and then we beat India 4-3 in the final. This meant that we qualified for the Champions Trophy!! The Champions Trophy is a prestigious tournament with the best teams in the world so you can imagine that we are very proud and honoured that we have qualified for this event. It will be the first time that Belgium will play this tournament, which is to be held in Australia in December.
Now we are less than a month away from the opening of the Olympic Games. The biggest sporting event in the world… At the moment we are still training with a group of 23 players and everyone is fighting for a spot in the first 16. A lot of other teams have already picked their team but we will hear our definitive selection sometime this week. So it is an exciting time for us! We still have a lot of training and some practice games ahead of us before we depart to London to be fully ready and prepared… I will try to keep you posted and send some pictures! On a personal note, I played my 150th game for Belgium last week at the Dusseldörf masters! Time flies when you’re having fun!!
